Culinary Arts Cook Off Competition - Jan. 29

On Friday, January 29th, Culinary Arts students participated in a cook-off competition.  Each team cooked three Asian dishes, and were judged on criteria such as kitchen safety, teamwork, sanitation, proper technique, and of course, taste and presentation.  All three teams did a terrific job, but ultimately, the highest scores went to Chelsea Oakes, Derrick Fischer, and Sarah Powell.  Congratulations to the students, and to Ms. Carter and Ms. Owens for coaching them along the way.

The Career Center is participating in the African Library Project, an effort to help provide needy libraries in sub-Saharan Africa with books for students.  Beginning in January and running through February 15th , we will be collecting donations of books to send to Busang Primary School in Botswana.  Busang has 360 students and 15 teachers, and desperately needs books in the following areas:

  • Board books for preschool children
  • Paperback fiction for grade school children
  • Paperback nonfiction for pre-k through 5th grade, especially social studies, geography, math, and science.

Shakespeare 101 Offered in 2010-2011

Next year (2010-2011) will bring a new, exciting course offering for Career Center students. We plan to offer Shakespeare 101, an honors credit elective, which promises to be an out-of-your-seats, active exploration of the man, the myth, the legend, William Shakespeare. We'll do more than read; we'll get Shakespeare off that page and onto the stage! (The stage will be our classroom - nobody panic.) Is anybody out there game?

Have you noticed the house that is being built on our campus?  This is a Habitat For Humanity house and it is a project of Mr. Stewart's Carpentry classes.  The Career Center students will perform much of the work on the construction of the house and will get some valuable experience in the process.  They are currently constructing the roof of the house.  Keep posted for updates on its construction. (updated 2/3/2010)

Parent Assistant Module (PAM)
1746/1746_286994471_7242.jpg

The Parent Assistant Module (PAM) is an online resource that can be used by parents to look at grades, attendance, and other important information about their child.  The Career Center is one of several schools participating in a pilot of this module.  Note that parents of Career Center students will only be able to access PAM if their child's home school is one of the participating high schools: East Forsyth, West Forsyth, Carver, Carver Jacket Academy, or Parkland.  In the near future, these parents will be receiving a letter from the WSFCS district, explaining how to access and use PAM.

Once you receive the letter, please follow the instructions on using this module. For more information, you can click on the Parent Assistant link to the left.  Please note that teachers are just now adding new assignments, quizzes, and tests into NCWISE, so it may take a few days before you see your child's work.

There is a new club at Career Center named the Invisible Children Unite Club, which is being sponsored by two of our teachers, Maureen Stanford and Akwete McAlister.  The club is raising money to help build a Girls' Dormitory at St. Mary's Lacor School in Uganda, Africa. Their efforts keep children in school rather than being forced into becoming Child Soldiers. The Invisible Children Unite Club currently has over 40 members and welcomes all!  Please contact Ms. Stanford or Ms. McAlister if you are interested in joining this effort.
